The Year in Preview: 2020

Updated: Jan 26, 2020

At the end of the year people tend to discuss what happened that year. That’s dumb 😜. So we’re gonna talk about what’s happening now and coming up. Obviously we’ve got like a metric crap ton of games every year now, which is awesome, so if you want a complete list (which is also updated regularly) check out gamesradar. It’s like boring though...this shit is all curated and interesting. *This post includes affiliate links, meaning I could theoretically make money from them. It will never influence my opinions, but the government wants you to know for some reason.

January:

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered is coming to PS4 and Switch in a couple of days. I tried to play FFCC back in the day but my “friend” was a real asshole. It’s supposed to be a cooperative game right, but this fool is trying to run around and grab everything so I can’t get it. That includes picking up a second of the spell he already has which does nothing for him and fucks me hard! If it wasn’t for the fact that he basically introduced me to anime, I’d track him down and stab him in the butt. Anyway, I hope they made it so that if you are playing multiplayer one of you doesn’t have to carry the stupid lamp.

Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea DX is part 3 of a series. If you care about part 3 you probably already know all about it and frankly I don’t know anything about it, so yeah. I played an Atelier game about being a shopkeeper for a minute, it was pretty decent. Looks interesting though, so maybe I’ll check it out.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is coming to PS4 and XBone, but of course it’s been on PC for a long time now. My comparison point for this type of game is always Neverwinter Nights, cuz that was my jam. I’ve already got it on PC but I’m so backlogged it’s dumb.

January in summation - January is pretty meh for me. I would definitely want to grab FFCC at some point, but no biggie.

February:

I gotta start with Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition (< this one is an upgrade). If I had time to play one game every day for 8+ hours I would be a pro SF player. As is, I’m garbage but I like to watch. I gotta set some reminders for Capcom Pro Tour.

PS4 is getting a Yakuza 5 Remastered Collection. I’m super late to the Yakuza game I guess. I’ve actually got 2 of them, but haven’t gotten to them yet. Seems like a sillier Sleeping Dogs (crazy sale ATM) and I don’t always do well with silly. Everybody seems to love em though.

Life is Strange 2 (< regular edition) has a collector’s edition coming out. I call this Telltale genre. I mean it ain’t, but it is. I dig these games, but I gotta say the whole timed decision is annoying as hell. What if none of the options are things I would do? Worse though is when the option says something like “That’s not cool, bro” but when you pick it the character is all “Fuck your mother scumbag!”

February in summation - It’s all about the sweet Street Fighter action. If you’re into or interested in Yakuza you get 3, 4, and 5. Honestly, I don’t think the LiS2 CE is worth it, but I won’t judge you if you do. All said, better than January but this year is slow rollin us.

March:

Personally, it’s Ori and the Will of the Wisps for me. I actually just played Blind Forest like two weeks ago, but it was tight and I’ve been on a metroidvania kick (emphasis on the Metroid). In fact I have a great idea for one I wanna make for mobile. I never will because I don’t have time to learn video game development, but yeah.

Persona 5 Royal is coming to PS4 and it kinda pisses me off. It’s gonna be amazing so if you didn’t play Persona 5 already cuz you are some kinda dummy you have to get it. I’m not doing it though. They won’t let me import my save data for a New Game Plus, so that’s total crap dude. Don’t let me deter you though.

I’ve never played an Animal Crossing game, but a new one is coming. I’d like to play it, but I don’t have a Switch and if I get a Switch there is other stuff I have to play first (Zelda, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, etc).

A lot of people are gonna be hype about Doom Eternal and Nioh 2, but *fart*.

March in summation - Ori is gonna be awesome and I’m gonna play it. Persona 5 Royal and Animal Crossing will likely also be dope, but I probably won’t play them. Doom and Nioh are also things. Again, each month is getting slightly better.

April:

Not much in April, but one of the most exciting / nerve racking is the Final Fantasy VII Remake. FFVII changed my whole gamer life. I hope all the nonsense comes back about a certain special materia being able to undo a certain mind exploding cutscene and a certain NPC* being able to be made into a PC. Also, just don’t fuck it up. This is a years of anticipation thing. I’ve been buggin about how it needed a remake since way before it was announced to boot. Normally I would say “oh dude, you gotta play the original” but I’m actually like “nah dawg play the remake”. Also this whole released in chapters thing is gonna be brutal.

Trials of Mana looks pretty dope too. Looks straight up JRPG goodness and I love the art style. I dug Secret of Mana, which I have on Game Boy Advanced (?). I hope it has the cool job system based on stats, but I hope it’s a little more blatant about it cuz I never knew til after the fact with Secret.

Resident Evil 3 is another one of those releases I think will be big for a lot of people. I never got into RE though.

April in summation - RPG month as far as I’m concerned. I think this is the first month we dipped back down a bit. After this it gets slimmer though just because dates haven’t been finalized. Also, if April hadn’t have gotten screwed outta Cyberpunk...

May:

In May we get one big and one little so far. Obviously The Last of Us 2 is a big deal. The multiplayer can suck my butt, but I’m down for the story. I’ll be straight (no pun intended) with you though. It’s pretty pathetic that all I’ve really seen is that Ellie is gay. Who cares, go kill some zombie type things.

Next up we’ve got Wasteland 3. Did you play the original Fallout 1 and 2? Well, I guess Fallout was heavily influenced by the original Wasteland. I don’t know why I didn’t have these games in this category in my head until literally just now, but it’s a Neverwinter Nights meets wild west. I’ve gotta find a better reference, cuz Disco Elysium is that same style, but I just can’t compare that to NN.

May in summation - Frankly, I don’t think either of these are day 1 games for me. I’ll wait for a sale. Maybe something else will end up getting a date in May, not that I won’t still have like 3 years of backlog anyway.

June, July:

Pokemon and Luigi expansions...fuck it, NEXT.

August:

Nope

September:

All 2 whole announced games are actually potential 🔥. Maybe you’ve already seen, but I’m hype about Cyberpunk 2077! I made a whole post about it, so I won’t rehash here. Frankly, I’m not sure what the hell you’d be doing here if you didn’t already know about it anyway.

We’ve also got Marvel’s Avengers coming out. Haven’t seen much about it yet though. My main thing is that I just hope it’s a new story. I also wonder how the transition between characters will work. If you can be any Avenger at any time the balance is gonna annoy me. My problem with the Avengers in general is that their power differences are too big for them to be on the same team. Man, I’m just asking for hate mail (which you can direct to atamer@navicain.com). Black Widow and Thor should not fight the same enemies. Anybody beyond maybe Captain shouldn’t even be allowed to fight a human. OK, I’m not saying I won’t end up talking about comic books on this site, but we’re moving on.

September in summation - Like I said, not many releases but both are legit.

There are no more official dates beyond this, but you can bet there will be plenty. A lot of games intentionally come out in the fall with the intentions of being holiday gifts.

Unconfirmed:

Dying Light 2 should be out sometime 2020. This is a good series for multi-player to me. Like you can just run around casually mercing fools and doin hardcore parkour.

Watch Dogs: Legion has been pre-ordered by me for a long time. Now, I do have questions though. They say you can recruit “anybody”. Does that mean I can win by just recruiting all the bad guys? Is it gonna end up being a thing where if I try to recruit somebody to bypass them in the mission I can’t really do that because that’s a new mission and then there is a new person in the way… How many people are in the game? Can I recruit all 6 million or whatever? I’m actually pretty sure there is a limit to how many people you can recruit even if it doesn’t matter who they are.

Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 is another where I’m super hype but also kinda worried. One thing you should know about me is that I fucking love vampires! I wanna be one so bad. If you are a vampire hit me in the DMs (@NaviCain). The only thing is, I gotta get in shape first cuz I don’t wanna be a fat immortal. Do I need LASIK first or will it fix my vision?

Ghost of Tsushima also looks frickety fresh (I’m always being ironic with my lame slang, DUH). Open world samurai shiz = noice! None of that lame Nioh stuff though, eww (disclaimer: I haven’t played it). A new Ninja Gaiden could be cool though. Anyway, hopefully gonna be super lit, brah.

Lightning Round:

Streets of Rage 4, Rainbow Six Quarantine, Spelunky 2, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Gods & Monsters, Destroy all Humans Remake, Halo Infinite, Hellblade 2, and lots more.

Wasn’t that so much better than just like a boring ass list? Let me know what you’re looking forward to most as well as like all the annoying shit I said so I can explain to you why you’re wrong. Love ya, buttmunch 😙😋😛😗💖
