Prep Work: Cyberpunk 2077

Updated: Jan 26, 2020

As you know, Cyberpunk 2077 is only three months away and I'm hype AF. So, I thought it was time for a little Prep Work. Let's do some edging with the best Cyberpunk media out there and when April hits we'll bust all over this game like Finch and the ficus. I'm intentionally picking stuff I haven't seen/read/whatever yet (mostly) so we can do this together. Don't spoil anything like a total douche. *This post includes affiliate links, meaning I could theoretically make money from them. It will never influence my opinions, but the government wants you to know for some reason.

Neuromancer - I'm embarrassed that I have to start here. I should have read this, I think I still have a copy around here somewhere, but for some dumb reason I never got around to it. Do the slightest bit of research on Cyberpunk (shut up, I know it doesn't need to be capitalized) and you can't miss this book. I'm not going to even bother with a description, cuz if you aren't gonna read it just go away now. I'm going to read it first and I suggest you do the same.

Snow Crash - This one comes up damn near as much as Neuromancer, but I gotta say I'm skeptical. The protagonist is actually named Hiro Protagonist, like I get it "look how on the nose I am", but then I saw the word infocalypse and I wanted to vomit. Hopefully there ain't too much of that shit. So anyway, I guess a computer virus is killing hackers?

OK, so this category is a bit sketch cuz I don't know there can be such a thing as Cyberpunk music and the interwebs can't seem to agree on what it is. That said, here is a couple of playlists and we can argue about it in the comments - and

Strange Days - I didn't link this because I can't even find a legit place to watch it. Was compared to Hackers (my favorite movie, don't you judge me), see below, because it bombed initially and supposedly became a cult hit later, but then why can't I find it? Well, I mean I "found" it and you will too you little naughty, but you get it. Look, this category was hard because I've seen most of the good stuff already.

eXistenZ* - I might have watched this at like 6 a.m. one "night". I don't remember it though so it doesn't count. Not sure how Cyberpunk it really looks. I guess Cyberpunk has to have a lot of neon in my opinion. It's about a VR game though. It's one of those movies that confuses me because I don't think I heard of it until long after it came out and it looks pretty low budget but has Jude Law and Willem Dafoe in it...

Stuff I've seen but if you haven't you definitely should - Blade Runner based off a story by the Neuromancer guy, it's basically THE Cyberpunk movie in the way Neuromancer is THE book. Matrix is a movie that you've either seen or I don't like you, so yeah (If you are under 25 I'll forgive you). Johnny Mnemonic is probably the reason, more so than the Matrix that Keanu is in Cyberpunk 2077 (it ain't random dude). It's kind of hilarious how little storage he had in his head though.

Video Games:

Invisible, Inc. - Tactical thingy like XCOM with Cyberpunk spy flavor. Made by the Mark of the Ninja guys. That's good enough for me. Apparently also kind of roguelike which isn't really my thing, but whatevs.

So obviously I try to play all the games, thus been here done these. What do you want from me? - Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Human Revolution are just awesome games in general but they also happen to scream Cyberpunk (and DEEPLY discounted at the moment). Shadowrun Returns, Hong Kong, Dragonfall are D&D (Dungeons and Dragons... you nerd) type RPGs. If you've played a Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights or Divinity: Original Sin you'll be right at home here. These too are on sale, though Hong Kong just barely for some dumb reason.

So yeah, that's that. Get to work. Share your thoughts (NOT SPOILERS) in the comments or on Twitter or something (@NaviCain).
